"He also asked about us. He wanted to know who we were, what we did, and how we lived as couples and families. When it came out that Natalie and I were about to become Jewish clergy, he mentioned that his on-staff chaplain was not Jewish, but he wrote down the name and number of a local Reform rabbi who we might want to talk to. Admittedly, we did not use the number. So the next evening, that rabbi called us in our hotel room. He said Dr. Tiller had called the synagogue, let them know we were in town, and said he suspected we weren’t in a place where we could make the first move. He invited us to Passover Seder at his home two nights later, and said we could decide anytime up to dessert being served that we wanted to show up, and that he would understand if we wanted to keep to ourselves. All because Dr. Tiller cared enough to make sure someone was reaching out to us."

BLEACH CHAPTER 494.5: THE NORSE POSITION

keepyourbsoutofmyuterus:

The George Tiller Memorial Abortion Fund is the National Network of Abortion Funds’ national abortion fund that helps women to pay for later abortion care and helps those who need to travel out of state for an abortion or those who live in a state that lacks an abortion fund. The Fund is managed by our national office and our National Case Manager. Women seeking later abortions must often travel very far from their home states to get to clinics that can provide the care they need. Later abortions are also significantly more expensive than first-trimester abortions.

The George Tiller Memorial Abortion Fund is the only resource of its kind.

We created the George Abortion Tiller Memorial Fund on May 31, 2009, the day that Dr. Tiller was assassinated in his church attending Sunday worship services.

[NB: More people than just cis women need and want access to abortion care.]

Dagger with Zoomorphic Hilt

  • Date: second half 16th century
  • Geography: India, Deccan, Bijapur or Golconda
  • Medium: Hilt: copper; cast, chased, gilded and inlaid with rubies. Blade: steel; forged
  • Dimensions: L: 15 5/8 in. (39.6 cm)

Portraits of Sultan ‘Ali ‘Adil Shah of Bijapur (r. 1558– 80) show him wearing daggers with zoomorphic hilts similar to this one.

In this superlative, ruby-studded hilt, a dragon, whose tail wraps around the grip, attacks a lion, which in turn attacks a deer, symbolism associated with the deity Garuda.

Before the deer is a parrotlike bird with a snake in its beak. Lower down on the hilt is the head of a yali, a mythical lionlike animal, with floral scrolls issuing from its mouth.

questionall:

It’s no surprise that women (at least those in the US and Europe) have it much better now than ever before. The question is what to make out of the current backward rush toward the “good old days” when, for example, a husband could never be accused of raping his wife. Are the proponents of the hundreds of bills affecting women’s health and sexuality just crackpots? Or are they following deeply held, legitimate beliefs that the freedom of women to direct their own sexual lives destabilizes society?

There is no doubt that the beliefs of Anthony Comstock or Sen. Rick Santorum, for that matter, can be genuine. Judging by the examples above, they also can lay claim to historical precedent. But the fact that something was done before does not make it legitimate. The “good old days” never existed. In fact, it is the fear-driven desire of men to control female sexuality and reproduction that should be corralled by the law, not reproductive choices.

This morning was an especially difficult exercise in self-control and anger management. This post will be far shorter than the last one, because I really don’t want to talk about it more than strictly necessary because it is disgusting, but I feel like this nasty…

Canada’s teen birth and abortion rate drops by 36.9 per cent
Better access to contraception, higher quality sex education and shifting social norms have contributed to a 36.9 per cent decline in Canada’s teen birth and abortion rate between 1996 and 2006, according to a report released today by the Sex Information and Education Council of Canada.
America’s emphasis on abstinence-only sex ed “tends to result in a higher percentage of teens becoming pregnant,” as does the country’s lack of universal health care. Poverty is another factor.
Among the four countries compared for 2006, Canada boasted the lowest teen birth and abortion rate per 1,000 women aged 15 to 19 (27.9), followed by Sweden (31.4), England/Wales (60.3), and the United States (61.2).

THIRTY-SEVEN PERCENT DECREASE? Goddamn. How much more proof will people need before they realize how ineffective Abstinence-Only sex education is?

It doesn’t matter how much evidence we have. Zealots will cling to their beliefs.

This reminds me of the LA high school where they cut teen pregnancies by two-thirds after putting a Planned Parenthood on campus. Sex ed works, abstinence doesn’t.
